Pearson’s Evaluation Systems Extends Long-Standing Partnership with the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education

Evaluation Systems of Pearson has entered into a new contract with the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) and will continue to deliver its Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure® (MTEL®).

Evaluation Systems (ES) has worked closely with the DESE for more than 25 years, supporting the administration and evolution of its state-approved educator licensure assessment program.

The MTEL program helps ensure that all prospective educators seeking licensure in Massachusetts have the knowledge and skills necessary for entry-level teaching in the state’s public schools. ES provides high-quality, customized assessments that meet the specific standards of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, which are centered around equity and access for all.

New enhancements to the current program will include:

  • the launch of additional MTEL Flex test titles; a flexible assessment option to enable candidates to demonstrate their knowledge and skills
  • the development of additional online interactive practice tests to better prepare teachers for their licensure exams
  • the introduction of new educator learning courses to support content gaps
  • the exploration of new test structures and modalities to drive innovation in educator assessments

Evaluation Systems collaborates with several US state education agencies and educator preparation programs, advancing their standards-based testing programs with continued innovation in test development and delivery.

"Striving to create educational content and learning environments that reflect the diversity of the modern world is a cornerstone of our business," explained Dr. E. Wyatt Gordon, SVP and Head of Evaluation Systems, Pearson VUE. "The Department shares our values around providing accessible and equitable products and services that meet market, compliance, and DEI standards and help every individual to succeed. We are excited to collaborate with them to introduce new innovations and enhancements to the MTEL program."

The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education serves as the state education agency for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Its primary responsibilities include overseeing public education at the elementary and secondary levels.
