The Royal College of Emergency Medicine

The Royal College of Emergency Medicine is the professional membership body for Emergency Medicine doctors in the UK. The College is established to advance education and research in Emergency Medicine. The College is responsible for setting standards of training and administering exams in Emergency Medicine for the award of Fellowship and Membership of the College as well as recommending trainees for CCT in Emergency Medicine.

Fellowship of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (FRCEM)

From August 2021, the Fellowship exam consists of the following components:

  • MRCEM Exam:
    • MRCEM Primary 
    • MRCEM Intermediate SBA
    • MRCEM OSCE
  • FRCEM Final Exam :
    • FRCEM SBA
    • FRCEM Objective Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE)

Exam and scheduling information

The following exams are available to sit at Pearson VUE test centres:

  • MRCEM Primary
  • MRCEM Intermediate SBA
  • FRCEM SBA

Each exam is delivered twice a year, the full exam schedule is available on the RCEM website.

Candidates must apply for their exam through the RCEM website during the published application windows.

Scheduling your test

Candidates will be contacted by the College after their application has been approved to notify the candidate, they will receive an e-mail from Pearson VUE regarding booking their exam.

  1. Sign in to your Pearson VUE web account
  2. Schedule your exam date.
  3. You will receive the exam appointment confirmation by email within 48 hours, with the date and location of the exam you will sit. If you do not receive the booking confirmation within 48 hours or if any of the information is incorrect, please contact Pearson VUE immediately: by phone or by email.

Approved comfort aids (at Test Centre only)

Pearson VUE test centres allow the comfort aids listed in the downloadable PDF HERE. On exam day, our test centre staff will ask to visually inspect these items.

Testing exceptions for nursing mothers

Pearson VUE supports test-takers that require an exception to breastfeed, express, or pump breast milk during their exam. Your exam program must approve your accommodations request in order for you to breastfeed, express, or pump during your exam. If you prefer to breastfeed, you must do so outside of the testing facility, as children are not allowed in the test centre.

If there are extenuating circumstances that prevents you from attending a Pearson VUE Testing Centre, please contact exams@rcem.ac.uk to be considered for Online Proctoring (OnVUE).
